A senior official at the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) has stated that the water quality in Durban Harbour has showed some signs of improvement. This comes following the release of chemicals from a chemical depot during a blaze that broke out at the harbour.

Departmental spokesperson, Raj Philips said the water quality monitoring programme around the Island View Storage depot revealed the water discolouration due to the fire has started to abate. There was also no indication that the chemicals have accumulated in one location or spread to other parts of the harbour.

According to police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge, three IVS employees were working around the storage tanks when the blaze began. Two of the three managed to escape, but the third is believed to have died.

Philips requested that anyone who noticed discoloured water or numbers of dead fish at other parts of the harbour, to contact him on his mobile phone at 0828089906.
