National Marine Week (NMW), which is celebrated annually in the third week of October, aims to create awareness and to promote the sustainable use and conservation of marine resources. The theme of this years NMW is Opportunities in the Ocean.

The programme is set to run from Monday 15th to Friday 19th October 2007 and will examine in greater detail, the potential contribution of the country's marine resources to support the socio-economic development of South Africa.

NMW will comprise of a series of Outreach Programmes throughout South Africa and will look closely at the potential provided by a number of key concepts namely: food provision and security; climate and weather; sea trade; recreation, culture and tourism; mining and minerals; and beneficial chemical compounds.

The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) provides the main impetus behind NMW as the custodian of marine resources in South Africa.
