Cape Town's last remaining major dune system, the Macassar Dunes Nature Reserve, is facing continued threats due to illegal sand mining from the area.

The dunes, which is home to 210 known indigenous plant species, are being stripped of sensitive vegetation as a result of the mining activities. Many of the plants are on the Red Data List.

The council has launched efforts to clamp down on those responsible.
