Twenty crew members were rescued from a sinking bulk carrier just off Saldanha Bay. The vessel, carrying a cargo of 22 500 metric tons of sugar, was en route from Brazil to India.

The captain of the Greek-owned Ioannis NK reported at 06:00 that the vessel was taking on water and listing. Two airforce helicopters were dispatched and the entire crew was safely evacuated to Saldanha Bay.
