Google has assembled an advisory group of oceanographic experts and invited researchers from around the world to discuss plans for the creation of a 3D oceanographic mapping service similar to Google Earth and Google Sky.

The new tool, which for the moment is being referred to as "Google Ocean" (not to be confused with a French-based project of the same name), will allow people to navigate the bathymetry of the ocean in a similar fashion as done with Google Earth.

Google however, has stated that the company has nothing to announce at the moment.

While satellite imagery has mapped much of the surface of the Earth, very little is known about what goes on beneath the ocean. Only a small fraction of the ocean floor has been mapped in detail.

Researchers speculate that Google may use high resolution bathymetric data from various oceanographic institutions to create their dataset.
