Project Mthombo on track in Coega, Port Elizabeth

PetroSA has stated that the plans to build a crude oil refinery at the Coega Industrial Development Zone (CIDZ) outside Port Elizabeth, are on track.

According to Sipho Mkhize, CEO for the Petroleum, Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (PetroSA), the design for the construction of the refinery, referred to as "Project Mthombo", is well-advanced and the corporation is holding discussions with several local and international organisations who have expressed interestin in possible financial and operating partnerships.

Project Mthombo is expected to cost around R39-billion and is expected to be operational by 2014. It is estimated to yield about 250000 barrels of fuel per day, and will cumulatively result in approximately 25000 jobs.
