Three people were arrested in the ocean near Robben Island in connection with the poaching of Abalone. Marine and Coastal Management (MCM) and the police are also in the process of tracking twelve other suspects in the vicinity.

According to DEAT spokesperson, Carol Moses, equipment used for abalone poaching as well as an inflatable boat was seized early this morning.

Further arrests are imminent.

Abalone are under severe stress and are currently classified as an endangered species. Poaching of Abalone has caused a significant portion of the problem. The situation prompted Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, to introduce drastic measures affecting the harvesting of Abalone and diving in certain areas along the coast in a bid to protect the resource.
