An oceanographer from the Stellenbosch regional office of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) made a bold attempt to keep budding students from the Khutsong community motivated after widespread service delivery-related strikes disrupted the area.

Mthuthuzeli "Kenny" Gulekana, an oceanographer employed by the CSIR, offered his expert services and sourced some 200kg of learning materials from the CSIR, the Department of Science and Technology (DST), iThemba Labs, Univerisity of Cape Town (UCT), Univeristy of the Western Cape (UWC), Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), and the Stellenbosch University which were delivered to the learners at a camp held at the Vuselela Further Education Training College. He also arranged for two co-presenters and funding from the African Centre for Climate and Earth Systems Science (ACCESS) to assist in the event.

"Our objectives were to motivate the learners, suggest tools that they can use and also to encourage them to pursue tertiary education in science, engineering and technology," said Gulekana.
