A new Marine Protected Area (MPA) has recently been proclaimed around the Prince Edward Islands in the Southern Ocean. The proclamation of area, which spans some 180 000 kilometres will come into effect after the required gazetting period has passed.

The Prince Edward Islands Marine Protected Area is the country's 21st marine preserve, and will be the 4th largest of its kind in the world. According to Marine and Coastal Management, 18% of the country's 3 000km long coastline is already under official protection, meaning that activities such as fishing and diving are regulated within those areas.
