PhD Fellowship programme for natural or life scientists

A notification about a PhD Fellowship programme for Natural or Life Science Students from one of the South Africa Development Community (SADC) countries has been received by the South African Network for Coastal and Oceanic Research (SANCOR).

The Carolina MacGillavry PhD Fellowship is intended to support the completion of a PhD on the basis of a sandwich construction. The 4-year fellowship provides for two stays at a guest university or research institute in the Netherlands, one at the beginning of the fellowship and one at the end. Together, these two periods are expected to last for 1.5 years. In between, the fellow is expected to spend up to 2.5 years carrying out his/her research project in his/her home country. The PhD is to be supervised jointly by a supervisor at the guest institute in the Netherlands and a supervisor at the fellow's home institute.

Field of study: natural or life sciences

Object: the Carolina MacGillavry PhD Fellowship Programme was launched in 1998 in accordance with the wishes of Professor Carolina MacGillavry (1904-1993), member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), to support young scientists from developing countries.

Target group: the Carolina MacGillavry PhD Fellowship Programme is intended for young scientists with an MSc or equivalent degree from one of the Southern African Development Community (SADC)-countries: Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe

Deadline for nominations is 15 May 2008
