Sand mining found to threaten Durban beaches

Researchers at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) have warned that river sand mining operations, which supply the construction industry, pose a serious risk to beaches along the Durban coastline.
The study found that beaches in the area are being starved of nearly 70 percent of the previous natural river sand yield due to the construction of dams, which trap sediment, and sand mining activities. This suggests that the pristine beaches which act as a major tourism attraction for the city, are under threat of erosion.
