A fire that broke out in the engine room of a registered cargo vessel from Panama on Saturday evening, has been brought under control. The vessel was situated approximately 12km outside Saldanha Bay.

Craig Lambinon, spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), said that at one stage the captain and his 24 crew members were preparing to abandon the vessel.

Before NSRI rescue craft reached the ship, the captain had already reported that the fire was under control. No further assistance was needed.
