Twelve suspected abalone poachers were arrested at Robben Island this morning after spending the night at sea. The suspects were part of a group from which three members were arrested earlier.

When police intially swooped on the group, three men were arrested and their vessel as well as equipment were confiscated. At that time, the twelve remaining divers were already in the ocean and, realising that the boat had been seized, swam over one nautical mile to Robben Island in an attempt to escape.

They were arrested on the island.

In another incident, two people were taken into custody at Hout Bay after it was found that one had an outstanding warrant of arrest for abalone dealing, and the second contravened the Merchant Shipping Act.

In total, the operations saw 17 people arrested and 2 inflatable vessels along with diving gear and equipment confiscated. Seventy-seven abalone were also seized during the operations.
