The South African Government has announced a ban on all wild abalone (perlemoen) fishing in a bid to save the species from commercial extinction.

Government also acknowledged that the employment of approximately 800 people will be affected by the ban, and have approved a social plan to address the job losses.

Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Minister for Environmental Affairs and Tourism said that "We are unfortunately at a point where the commercial harvesting of wild abalone can no longer be justified because the stock has declined to such an extent that the resource is threatened with commercial extinction."
