A delegation of scientists from the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO) is to present a call for action at the annual ministerial meeting of the international Group on Earth Observations (GEO) in Cape Town on Friday 30th November 2007.

POGO has proposed a complex array of satellites, fixed monitoring stations, tagging of marine animals and a suite of research vessels in order to provide a better monitoring solution for the global oceans - the result of which will provide researchers with more data to ensure that the world is able to respond effectively to any potential threats.

The group estimates that it would cost up to $3-billion to develop the system withing the next ten years and plan to ask GEO to provide the funding.
