The City of Cape Town is proposing to formulate a set of guidelines that will put an end to developments that have detrimental environmental impacts on coastal areas.

The guidelines are intended to be more closely aligned to the National Coastal Bill which calls for greater responsibility to be expressed by local authorities in as far as coastal development is concerned.

The City Strategy and Planning Department has suggested that no further developments occur in certain "danger zone" areas - such as Woodbridge Isle, Kommetjie, Fish Hoek, Strand and Muizenberg - unless specific design and development criteria are met.

In addition to this, the department plans to appoint specialist consultants to investigate issues related to climate change and sea level rise over the long term.
