The Open-Cycle Gas-Turbines (OCGTs) located at Atlantis and Mossel Bay are set to operate for extended periods in order to cope with demand during the scheduled refuelling of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.

The nuclear units at Koeberg are shut down every 16 to 18 months for refuelling and maintenance purposes. During this time, electricity users will have to endure low electricity reserves. Andrew Etzinger, spokesperson for Eskom explained however that load shedding was not expected unless unforeseen failures occur.

Ankerlig in Atlantis, and Gourikwa in Mossel Bay were completed in mid-2007 at a cost of approximately R3.5 billion. The two OCGTs add some 1 050MW to the nation grid, and plans have been laid to expansion them to add an extra 1 000MW to the grid by the end of 2008.
