Police seized about R2.5million rands worth of abalone and processing equipment from an illegal abalone processing factory near Ann's Villa. The outcome of the raid is one of the biggest hauls yet in the battle against the poaching plague that threatens the seriously endangered marine species.

Investigating officer, Inspector Thys de Beer, said that the factory was producing dried perlemoen that was bound, almost certainly, for Gauteng and then ultimately for the Far East. According to de Beer, a team of eight police officers from the Port Elizabeth organised crime unit, the Cradock crime and intelligence gathering, and Marine and Coastal Management Directorate took part in the raid.

Three Asian men, who spoke very little english were taken into custody during the raid.

According to de Beer, the factory looked like a "very professional operation" indicating that a syndicate is likely involved.
