Police in the Western Cape region have arrested eight more suspects for the possession of more than 32 700 dried abalone, commonly known as perlemoen worth approximately R7,5 million.

The arrests follow those made last month, of a 22-year-old South African and two Chinese nationals aged 35 and 37 years who have already appeared in court.

In a bid to safeguard the endangered mollusc, the State has suspended all fishing in the commercial abalone industry earlier this year. The suspension was successfully defended in court after facing a legal challenge from the South African Abalone Industry Association. The abalone resource however, remains in a state of crisis.
