The twenty-one people accused of operating the countries biggest international abalone (perlemoen) smuggling ring have had the case against them dropped from the court roll.

Gauteng businessman Wei Lui Lui and his co-accused were alleged to be in possession of R200-million (470 tons) worth of Abalone. The amount was more than four times the total allowable catch for the entire industry for last year.

After prosecutors' repeated requests for postponements, movement of the trial between different courts and the death of one of the accused, Magistrate Wilma van der Merwe was convinced that the group's rights to a speedy trial had been infringed.
