Oil and gas giant British Petroleum (BP) has questioned the need for Project Mthombo, the building of a 400 000 barrel-a-day refinery at Coega in the Eastern Cape.
BP Chief executive Sipho Maseko claimed that there is enough surplus refinery capacity in the world and is likely to remain so beyond (the year) 2020. He also stated that "It therefore makes no sense to burden South African taxpayers when better and cheaper options are available than building a new, expensive refinery."
